About Me

What is your approach to getting people engaged with H+S?

As an outsider coming in, each workplace is unique, requiring a tailored approach to getting people engaged. It requires taking time to understand the context and to appreciate various stakeholders’ perspectives. In addition, ensuring safety is communicated as an important part of the business which creates expectation; setting a visible example for other people leaders to follow and workers to see; focusing on the positives; listening to feedback and encouraging worker ownership of safety.

What is one of your proudest achievements in your H+S career?

Working closely with WorkSafe’s Kaiarawhiti o Te Pou Ora (Māori Advisor) and leading WorkSafe’s pilot Maruiti (Safehaven) program in 2021 for Tangiwai Sawmill. Or leading a large organisation’s Covid-19 response and ensuring mills were able to operate with appropriate controls in place to keep workers safe, without major disruptions.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m interested in new technology and the outdoors. I’m also a member of New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA).
